The Icebox

Back in my favorite year 2020 (that's sarcasm) one of my best friends had gotten a job in the summer at this ice factory called 'Home City Ice'. He had worked there for 2 weeks and kept telling me how fun it is and how the pay was pretty good at the time. I didn't have a job then and I wanted some money for the summer, so then he convinced me to apply. While this wasn't my first job, I still didn't have much "work experience". My first job was working as a "lifeguard" at a trampoline park in Downers Grove. I was only there for 2 months before the COVID-19 pandemic took over and I couldn't work. I had a few months off from working and then on July 14th I went in for an interview at Home City Ice and they hired me on the spot.

Working this job was a completely different environment than what I was used to. I was working in a factory where things could go very wrong very quickly. When they hired me, I had to go through extensive training to make sure that I knew what I was doing. I had to learn how the machines work, how the pallet jacks worked, as well as learning how to move and park semis and box trucks. It was all a learning experience and I loved the job for the most part.

I enjoyed the aspects of being able to listen to music while I bagged the ice. I enjoyed that I was working with my friends because my friend and I got a bunch of our buddies from the highschool to work with us. This meant that almost every shift I worked, I was working with friends. It was awesome because we would mess around and have fun but still get the work done that needed to get done.

My friends & I

The main reason I don't work there anymore is because they didn't give me time off even when I told them I wasn't going to be able to work with plenty of time notice. At the beginning of this school year I couldn't take it anymore and I quit working there. It was fun while it lasted, but the management there was lacking. They expected so much out of us highschool boys and at times they were even rude to us. Overall, I enjoyed working there but sometimes certain things aren't meant to last forever.
